Staff Accountant

LOCATION: Hybrid/ Newark, New Jersey            

CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time / Non-Exempt- 37.5 hours/week

ANNUAL SALARY: $40,000 – $45,000/year


Perform accounting functions needed to provide accurate and timely reporting. Enter and record journal entries and prepare schedules to close monthly reporting cycles.


  • Independently prepare and post journal entries into the ABILA accounting system, including bi-weekly payroll, expense allocations, cash receipts, revenues, and adjusting journal entries.


  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations for Grants Receivable, Refundable Advances, and Accrued Expenses.


  • Prepare bank deposits for payments/donations received, post cash receipts into the accounting system, and maintain petty cash.


  • Reconcile credit card activity and upload it into accounting system.


  • Prepare quarterly invoices to partner hospitals and monitor collections.


  • Assist with annual audit, including the provision of supporting documentation.


  • Prepare and enter any entries needed at month and year-end including depreciation, vacation accrual, and payroll accruals.


  • Assist Senior Accountant whenever needed, including but not limited to preparing monthly variance reports for program staff, assisting with budget preparation in Microix, and assisting with budget modification process for all grants.


  • Handle other ad hoc assignments as requested.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   Work is performed in a variety of office, health care, and community settings; may involve bending, color identification, gripping with hands and fingers, hearing voice conversation, keyboarding, kneeling, lifting up to 35 pounds, pulling, pushing, reaching, sitting, standing, stooping and walking.  Successful performance requires specific vision abilities that include close vision.  The employee will attend meetings at various places and will need to drive.  Occasional stair climbing is required.


WORK REQUIREMENTS:  There are no unusual work conditions.  The noise level at work is moderate.  The employee will experience outside weather conditions while in transit to and from meetings or during special events.



  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • One year of general ledger accounting experience.
  • Familiarity with non-profit accounting principles.
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines and prioritize competing assignments.
  • Self-starter who is proactive and can work independently.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office and accounting software.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
