Community Doula Supervisor

LOCATION: Newark, New Jersey       

CLASSIFICATIONFull Time/Exempt- 37.5 hours/week

ANNUAL SALARY: $55,000 – 60,000/year

Under the supervision of the Director of Public Health Initiatives, oversee the implementation, coordination and development of an Essex County based community doula program through collaborative partnerships with local birthing hospitals, community agencies, and residents. Responsible for supervising Essex County Doula team.


  • Identify and establish collaborative relationships with clinical point staff at birthing facilities in Essex County to promote the community doula program and review current hospital doula policies.
  • Coordinate monthly check-in meetings with core implementation team members which include Partnership Doula project staff, contacts from Essex County birthing hospitals and community organizations.
  • Along with clinical staff, identify areas of professional/clinical education and coordinate virtual or in-person sessions to Obstetric clinical staff.
  • Develop promotional materials (i.e., flyers, videos, social media posts, etc.) and events to educate community members about the community doula program and HealthConnect One training.
  • Plan and coordinate a virtual Essex County Community Doula Program “Kick Off” event involving key clinical staff and community stakeholders, community advocates and residents, as panel members.
  • Publicize community training program and conduct outreach to identify candidates in Essex County for doula training. Hold virtual public information session(s) for prospective candidates.
  • Review training candidate applications and interview potential community doula trainees from Essex County.
  • Coordinate, plan and deliver the HealthConnect One training to community members and guide each trainee until certification process is complete.
  • Identify opportunities for trainee clinical observations requirements which include pre and postnatal visits, childbirth education classes, and breast/chest feeding education, including the completion of a CPR certification class, a cultural competency program, and the observation of three births.
  • Provide phone support and be available on call (24/7) by cell phone for community doulas in training for non-medical questions related to pregnancy, medical appointments, and births.
  • Once each community doula trainee is certified, provide guidance on becoming a Medicaid/NJ FamilyCare provider.
  • Identify other opportunities for community engagement & service coordination (examples would include doulas presenting to Centering Pregnancy group sessions, connections with FQHCs and other prenatal care providers, collaborations with home visitation programs, etc.)
  • Attend community-based meetings to promote the Essex County Community Doula Program.
  • Meet with the Doula project team regularly to review program progress, challenges, and data collection.
  • Complete all program reporting accurately and according to the timeline required by funder.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a certified doula (HealthConnect One Certification preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred with a strong focus in maternal and child health, early childhood, public health, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience providing professional/community education, home visiting and/or supportive services for women and birthing individuals, and families.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to use a database for record keeping, supervision and reporting.
  • Experience with program planning and management, and community-based programs.
  • Experience working with diverse and multi-cultural populations.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office Suite.
